Nelson Designer Takes Home Three Awards

On Friday 4 August at the Regional ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards held in Christchurch, architecture from the Nelson / Marlborough region was celebrated. One designer from the region stood above the rest, taking home three major awards.

Tony Karsten of Karsten Architecture Limited.

Tony took home awards for two projects, Suburban Simplicity and Surburban Stealth.

Suburban Stealth took home a regional Award in the New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 category along with a Resene Colour in Design Award. The ADNZ judges commented on the imperturbable façade which belies the collection of light open spaces beyond.

“Natural light animates the spaces but is also moderated by screens and overhangs, and the warmth of the white ceilings and walls is offset by light timber fittings and furniture. Carefully detailed sliding screens allows the media room to double as a bedroom, and a secret mezzanine provides additional complexity in the otherwise simple gable. “

Suburban Simplicity took home a Highly Commended Award for its beautiful interiors, the judges were impressed by the well-placed timber, tile and transparent material features, “Highlights include the angled window seat framing, the translucent foldaway screens, and the incorporation of multi-functional outdoor spaces.”

ADNZ CEO, Keryn Davis, praised Tony’s achievements on the night,

“Tony Karsten is no stranger to the awards podium. He is a stellar designer, with the awards to prove it. Well done Tony.”

All winners of regional awards are finalists in the National ADNZ Resene Architectural Design Awards. The national winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on 27 October in Wellington.
