ADNZ/Resene 2008 Regional Design Awards Lower North Island Region
The winners of the ADNZ/Resene 2008 Regional Design Awards – Lower North Island Region will be announced at an awards lunch on Wednesday 20 August at the Hotel Coachman in Palmerston North.
Architectural Designers New Zealand Inc (ADNZ) was formed in 1966 to promote and develop the professional skills and services offered by its members, who are all specialists in building design and construction. Its annual award programme, the ADNZ/Resene Design Awards, aims to celebrate architectural design excellence, boost design standards and acknowledge the creative influence of ADNZ members.
The Lower North Island Regional Awards were judged in 14 categories covering residential, commercial and interior projects and featuring the inclusion of the new Sustainable Design Award category.
Judging the competition this year was Wellington-based registered architect Bruce Welsh, interior designer Wendy Elers from Wendy Elers Colour & Design, and Registered Master Builder John Hanna.
The judges examined a diverse range of entries and were impressed with the high standard of projects entered into the competition.
2008 saw three standout entrants, two of whom are based at Paraparaumu Beach, and the other in Wellington. The trio won 11 awards categories between them, and took away 13 finalist placings.
Peter Davis from AD Architecture at Paraparaumu Beach took out the first of his four awards in the Residential New Single Dwelling Up to 250sqm category, for his design of Waa Rata in Reikorangi. The house also won the newly introduced Sustainable Design award.
The judges congratulated Davis on his good choice of maintenance-free materials, which included Timbercrete blocks and ????? Among the home’s ESD features were double-glazing, water storage and sewerage-treatment facilities, as well as a micro-hydration system.
‘A visually appealing, timeless design in two pods linked by a central gallery, which enables the best views and outdoor flow to maximise the site. The living quality of this eco-friendly, sustainable house is not diminished by its remote location,’ said the judges.
Another project by Peter Davis, in collaboration with colleague Brynne McCauley, took out the second major award, the Residential New Single Dwelling Over 250sqm category. Mills House in Kohe Kohe Rd received significant praise from the judges:
‘In all areas, this entry excelled – site location, planning, materials, aesthetic appeal, liveability and energy efficiency,’ they commented. ‘We felt the client’s brief was more than fulfilled and found this property difficult to fault.’
The third of Peter Davis’s winning entries, Nelson House at Nikau Valley Kapiti, designed in conjuction with Brynne McCauley, won the Roof Design award, with the judges remarking on the appropriateness of the gable roof for the rural setting.
Another Paraparaumu Beach-based designer, Darren Hunter from Hunter Design Studio Ltd, also won four award categories, and was a finalist behind Peter Davis in both New Residential Single Dwelling categories. Hunter’s design of the Bellagio Apartments in Wellington won both the Commercial Interiors award and the Resene Colour award.
‘A dramatic entry with good use of feature lighting and bold foyer signage,’ complimented the judges. ‘It incorporates quality materials in a contemporary design, with three nice options for timeless interiors to the apartments. Colour is used to add warmth and character.’
Hunter’s second entry, Hadfield Road in Peka Peka, took out both the Bathroom and Special Projects categories. His bathroom design incorporated clever use of mirrors to increase the spatial feel of the room, and cutouts in the walls to create additional storage and display options. The judges admired this entry for its innovative design and use of materials.
A bookcase designed by Hunter for this home won the Special Projects award, earning praise as ‘an innovative method of achieving a barrier and storage/bookcase. The simple, clean lines, good detailing and use of natural timbers link well with other elements in the house.’
Wellington architectural designer Graeme Calcott was also acknowledged for this high calibre of entries, and received two awards for his work on Binns House in Khandallah. This project was the winner of the Residential Alterations and Additions category, impressing the judges with its careful planning of space to maximise views over Wellington Harbour. They also admired the use of clerestory windows and skylights to bring natural light and warmth into the back of the house, and the great selection of materials, including semi-frameless glass balustrades so as not to block the views.
Calcott’s kitchen design for this project won the Kitchen category, with the judges announcing: ‘This kitchen provides a clean, uncluttered design using quality materials and finishes with great proportions.’
Karori House, another of Graeme Calcott’s projects won the Residential Interiors award and was a finalist in five other categories: Colour, Roofs, Kitchen, Bathroom and Residential New Single Dwelling Over 250sqm. The judges commented on its clever material selection and the use of water as a design element enhanced at night with feature lighting.
Calcott’s Binn House was a finalist in this category. ‘A very close second place,’ said the judges. ‘With simple clean lines, this house has been tastefully brought into the new millennium.’
The Distinctive Design Award, sponsored by James Hardie, was won this year by Barry Nix from Barrakuda Design for his refurbishment of the Manchester Tavern in Fielding. The judges liked his clever use of colours and materials, which set the tavern apart from other shops around it. ‘Design features such as the coffered soffit, parapet detailing and curved corner fascia take the building to a new level,’ they commented.
This project also won the Commercial/Industrial category, commended as ‘a refreshing approach to retail design. The building surprises with increasingly levels of detail in the fenestration and columns, and quality finishes,’ said the judges.
The First Time Entrant award was won this year by Tony Biesiek from Imagine Building Design in New Plymouth. The judges said his design for the Smith House was ‘a great example for a first-time entrant. Design features incorporating curves and different materials, such as louvres, made this property a winner.’
