** PRESS RELEASE **
ADNZ/Resene 2009 Lower North Island Regional Design Awards
The winners of the ADNZ/Resene 2009 Lower North Island Regional Design Awards will be announced at a presentation dinner on Tuesday 28 July.
Architectural Designers New Zealand Inc (ADNZ) was formed in 1966 to promote and develop the professional skills and services offered by its members, who are all specialists in building design and construction. Its annual award programme, the ADNZ/Resene Design Awards, aims to celebrate architectural design excellence, boost design standards and acknowledge the creative influence of ADNZ members.
The judges were impressed by the high quality of the entries, especially given the less-than-buoyant market conditions of the past year.
There were several multiple winners in the awards, including Tony Biesiek from Imagine Building Design, who took out three categories including Residential Single Dwelling over 250 sqm, Distinctive Design and the Multi-Unit Dwelling award.
Tushka Glintmeyer also won three awards: Commercial Interiors, Resene Colour and Residential Interiors – for her collaborative effort with Nathan Rooney.
Other multiple winners were designers Barry Nix and Wayne Tansley, who won two categories each.
Ian Jensen, from Building Services Ian Jensen Design, won out in the New Residential Single Dwelling Up to 250sqm. His project, the Grant Bach, drew praise from the judges for “sitting comfortably on its sheltered site and displaying a good use of natural finished materials.” The judges noted that the house made good use of passive solar design and had a relaxing liveable interior.
Keith Webby from Keith Webby Architectural Designer Ltd earned a finalist citation for his “clear simple design” of the Walker House.
In the New Residential Single Dwelling Over 250sqm category, sponsored by Trends Publishing, Tony Biesiek from Imagine Building Design earned the first of three awards. His entry, the Johnston-Low house, impressed the judges with its simple horizontal form and clever siting. “A good response to the client brief, with a material choice that enhances the design solution,” the judges said.
Finalists in this category were Gary Phillips from Novare Design Group and Barry Nix from Barrakuda Designs
Tony Biesiek’s second win came in the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Award, sponsored by Dynex. His Kissick Apartments in New Plymouth were hailed as a “bold design,” making “good use of unadorned natural materials and efficient use of space.”
Finalist in the multi-unit dwelling category was Jonathon Ambler for his project in Cockayne Road, Ngaio.
In the Residential Alterations and Additions category, Wayne Tansley, from Calcott Architecture and Landscape Design Ltd won with his entry, Karori Alterations. The judges described the project as a “subtle but significant alteration that transformed this dated, poorly lit house into a comfortable liveable home.”
Peter Davis, from AD Architecture Ltd, was recognised with a finalist commendation in the alterations category for a house in Corlett Road in Plimmerton.
Marty Horn from Emerge Architecture won the Commercial/Industrial award, sponsored by Trends Publishing, for his project called 931 Tremain Avenue. The Palmerston North project caught the judges’ eyes as “an excellent transformation of a tired building into a new vibrant commercial premises.” The judges also praised Horn’s clever use of colour to differentiate tenancies.
Andrew Whitney’s Bridge Street Shops and Apartments project in Napier was recognised with a Commercial/Industrial finalist commendation.
In the Residential Interiors category, sponsored by Elephant Plasterboards, Tushka Glintmeyer and Nathan Rooney combined to wow the judges with their Waitaheke Wetland project. The judges remarked that it “artfully met the client brief, with crisp clear details and an excellent choice of materials and colours.” The light filled space made excellent use of the views to the wetlands.
Another of Glintmeyer’s projects, Cheviot Road, earned a finalist nod in the same category. Graeme Calcott, from Calcott Architectural and Landscape Design Ltd, was also a finalist for his Churton park project.
Glintmeyer’s Gusto winning project in the Commercial Interiors category drew praise from the judges for being a “sensitive remodelling of a heritage building.” Her winning entry distinguished itself as a “rich atmospheric space, making superb use of light, shade colour and texture.”
Finalist Tony Biesek was nominated for his “subtle integration of pharmacy and beauty room” in his Inglewood project, The Beauty Room.
In the Bathrooms category, sponsored by Michel César by Smail and Co, Wayne Tansley from Calcott Architecture & Landscape Design won for the “excellent use of roof lighting and vertical space, which enhances a well-appointed bathroom” in his Karori Alterations project in Monaghan Avenue, Karori.
Keith Webby’s Somerton House was recognised as a finalist in the Bathrooms category.
Nicola Habbitts, from Design Habbitts, won the day in the Kitchens category, sponsored by Applico, with her project in Days Bay. The judges were enamoured with the way the kitchen “responds sensitively to the brief and the character of the existing house, as well as taking its design cues from the surrounding bush environment.” Habbitts also won the First-time Entrant award for the same project, with Margaret Robinson nominated as a finalist.
Keith Webby was a finalist in the Kitchen category for his Somerton House, with its “functional, well-designed workspaces.”
In the Resene Colour category, Tushka Glintmeyer from Space Architectural Studio collected her third award. Her project Gusto distinguished itself with its “sophisticated and subtle sympathies.” The use of subtle lighting contributed to the colour and richness of texture and “the clever use of light enhanced the depths to create a sophisticated space.”
The judges awarded two finalists in the Resene Colour category: Nicola Habbitts’ Days Bay renovation and Nathan Rooney and Tushka Glintmeyer’s Waitaheke Wetlands.
Barry Nix from Barrakuda Design won the Special Projects category for his project Turnbull Courtyard. His Palmerston North project narrowly beat out Margaret Robinsons’s Mackintosh Garage due to its excellent use of contrasting materials. The judges described Nix’s design as “an amazing transformation of an exposed outdoor space enhancing the liveability of the existing residence.”
Nix also won the Roof Design category, sponsored by Gerard Roofs. His entry, the Crothers House in Feilding, displayed a “traditional roof form that enhances and completes the substantial formal house design.”
Keith Webby’s Walker House in Palmerston North was a finalist for its well-balanced monolith roof forms.
In the Distinctive Design category, sponsored by James Hardie, Tony Biesiek’s Johnston-Low entry won for its “great use of Linea’s horizontal lines in combination with other horizontal features – windows, roof line and louvres.” Biesiek’s design used Linea to complement the overall look of the house as well as using brick to create visual breaks.
Keith Webby’s Walker house in Palmerston North also earned a finalist nod in the Distinctive Design category.
